Call for Artist
Engaging Graffiti Kids in Creation, not Destruction Program
“5 Murals, 5 Boroughs, 5 Parks”
2006 Locations: Brooklyn/ the Bronx/ Manhattan
Deadline for submission: Thursday, June 29th 2006 at 6 pm
CITYarts is looking for three artists to create outdoor murals (one in each borough) on previously vandalized walls this Summer/Fall in collaboration with former young graffiti offenders and youth from Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
Project Description: We’ll ask kids to trade in their spray paint for paint brushes in order to create murals that curb juvenile delinquency and give youth from underserved neighborhoods an introduction to a time-honored profession. These well-known offenders will be turning in their “tags” and, for the first time, signing their actual names to public art. The theme of each mural will be drawn from the ideas of the participants and incorporated into a professional mock-up, which then will be painted on each wall by the youth under the direction of the artist.
To apply, please submit:
1. 5-10 slides or a CD of your recent work
2. A current resume
3. A statement no more than a page long which will outline your thoughts & approach to the work specified
4. A self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your materials
Send the materials to: Helen Schumacher, Assistant to the Director
CITYarts, 525 Broadway, Suite 700, New York, NY 10012
Review Process:
Stage 1: A panel of art professionals and community members will review the submissions and select semifinalists.
Stage 2: A time will be arranged for the semifinalists to meet at the CITYarts’ office with panel members. Possible themes will be explored and questions will be answered. Decisions on the selected artists will be made between July 1st and July 3rd, and then announced the following week.
Specifications:
1. The finished mural will enhance the exterior wall in each park.
2. The artist fee will be $10,000. There will be a separate materials budget.
3. The artist will be responsible for designing the work inspired by the youth’s art, supervising the participants and leading workshops in the painting process, and the completion of the work.
4. FLEXIBILITY is important in this project. The artist must be open to change his/her design
according to the panel’s suggestions, as it is a collaborative project.
5. The final design will be decided by the end of July. Completion should take place before the end of September.
6. This is a WORK FOR HIRE; the copyright is to be owned by CITYarts as the author of the
work pursuant to 17 U.S.C.S. 201(b).
