Getting into the Spring end of things, they are unveiling their Masterpiece collabo.

Saster: How long have you been customizing sneakers?
JGoods: About six years.

Saster: What got you into the game?
JGoods: I’m a sneaker head. I always liked having different shoes than everybody else so I used to go looking all over the place for shoes that nobody had. Eventually I heard about a couple people attempting to paint their shoes again (like people were doing in the 80’s). I thought that having a 1 of 1 customized sneaker would take the exclusivity I was looking for to the next level. I did some research, came up with my own paint formula, and started customizing. People have really liked my stuff so far so it has grown quite a bit from where I started.

Saster: How competitive is the profession?
JGoods: It’s getting pretty competitive these days because more and more people are starting to do it. I don’t really mind though because I like seeing good designs from other people. That’s why I sell my “Custom Kits”.

Saster: Approximately how many sneakers have you customized thus far?
JGoods: I don’t even know. Over 100 for sure…and that’s quite a lot considering how long they take me to do.

Saster: How do you end up with so many celebrities rocking your kicks? Is there a way you are connected, or they just understand the depth of your talent and gravitate towards your gear?
JGoods: I think it’s two things: the quality of my designs and knowing the right people. I’ve been doing this for a while and when I started, I definitely didn’t have any celebrity clients. My reputation has grown and more people have seen my stuff. I think getting a little buzz is what helps in getting some celebrities to see my work.

Saster: What other things are you customizing in the future?
JGoods: More and more different styles of shoes. I will also be working more on the “JGoods” clothing line and there are a couple other possibilities but nothing worth mentioning yet.

Saster: What was it like working on Jay Z’s kicks? Pharrell? Cam’ron?
JGoods: It was pretty surreal. I’ve been a fan of these guys for a long time and I never thought I’d be working on shoes for them. A lot of the time, then you’re doing a shoe for a celebrity, it’s pretty stressful because they need them fast. For instance, when I was doing the “Water for Life/Jay-Z shoes, I received word on a Wednesday that he needed before he left on his world tour on Friday. So, I didn’t sleep for almost two days and I had to Fed-Ex them overnight.

Saster: Some future celebs, events, happenings?
JGoods: I have to be tight lipped on future celebs until I get the clearance, but there are some good people coming up. Think NFL. Also, the  “JGoods Shoe Customization Kits” will be showing up in sneaker boutiques across the U.S. and Europe soon. Keep checking thejgcustoms.com for news and new designs…Respect!
