[...] Cope2 began writing in 1978, after seeing subway trains emblazoned with the graffiti of BAN2, COMET, BLADE, and MITCH 77. Once Carlo learned from his mentors, he quickly left his mark around New York City, bombing his way through – and eventually becoming the “king” of – the city’s 2, 4 and 5 subway lines. Years and years of hitting up nearly everything in sight finally paid off, literally, when Time Magazine offered Cope2 over $20,000 to leave his tag on a billboard in Manhattan. The move angered some in the underground graffiti community, but Carlo states that it’s merely a way to survive without breaking the law: “People will say I’m being a sellout, but I paid my dues. I destroyed subways, roofs, highways, streets, I beat nigg*s down, I can rack. I don’t need to keep doing that. I’m thirty-seven and have another kid on the way.” [...]
