SasterTV > KINGS OF THE CITY / Maysles Graffiti Film Festival = Success
Recently I paid a visit to the Maysles Cinema Theater in Harlem, and it was fantastic to see graffiti films on the big screen, and in a cinema atmosphere. This is something quite special, because never seen before in New York City, is the first Graffiti Film Festival, and in the historic location of Harlem. The Kings Of The City film festival will be going on this month, up until the 27th.
Getting to the cinema was a snap, really easy. Once we arrived, we quickly got our tickets and were in to see the feature of ‘Stations Of The Elevated’. This is a classic film from the 70’s that is a documentary and has a classic soundtrack from Charlie Mingus. This is one of the most brilliantly filmed and historic documentaries of graffiti culture, and has become a cult film of the genre, I just never get tired of seeing this film.
Not only was it great to see the film, but we had the opportunity to speak with the director [ Manfred Kirchheimer ] and to hear his story and take on Graffiti. We need to have more of these events in the NYC!
James Top and Alain Ket had also promoted some slides and film that made things interesting for the audience.
After the showing of the films, there was a quaint get together downstairs with canvas’ from some of the most renown cats in the game. Zephyr, Stak, Noxer and others have their works on display and if you have the cash, you can take some of these jammies home, they are for sale!
Andreas ‘Dress’ Vingaard is the curator of this fine affair, with Jessica Green and Philip Maysles / co- curators at the theater. They have done an excellent job getting these films up for viewing, so do take advantage of this opportunity to see them on the screen. Don’t front…. these films are shown once, and one time only!
The Maysles Cinema is focused on documentary, and ‘real life’ oriented film. I am glad to share with you, that this is also one of the only cinemas that I am aware of that goes by the ‘suggested’ price, and you can’t beat that in today’s economic times! So, everyone is welcome, and all contributions are greatly appreciated. I really can’t get over how fortunate we are to have a theater of this sort, and we need more of them!
And to let you know what’s up and coming at the theater – Counter Punch will be arriving to the Maysles Cinema, and this is going to feature some boxing ‘heavy weight’ documentaries. Loaded with boxing documentaries, there will be some historic boxing matches on the big screen. Visit their website to see who and what is going to be showing.
